Exercise 5.1:Compare and contrast.
For this exercise I used a write up of the Marina Abramovic exhibition of two different newspaper journalists, one from the Guardian and one from the Times. There were certainly good graphic descriptions of what the artist does in using her body and exposing this in very extreme manners, but what I found interesting is the fact that there also seemed to be derogatory undertones about her and I think this was because she was a woman and there seemed to be a typical dismissal of her work and any deep understanding of it. One of them for example referred to her and whether she was part of a cult. I haven’t gone into great detail about their comments as I have chosen to do a fuller account of my personal visit to her exhibition. These articles could be used for me to give a balanced and more objective view of her work including some argument here.
